Retired Racehorses Compete at Aintree Event
Approximately 350 retired racehorses are competing in the Retraining of Racehorses National Championships at Aintree Racecourse in Merseyside this week. This annual event, organized by the Retraining of Racehorses charity, runs until Sunday and aims to promote the welfare of former racehorses by providing them with new opportunities in equestrian sports.
Among the participants is Kimberlite Candy, a 14-year-old horse who previously finished second in the virtual Grand National in 2021. His rider, British eventer Hollie Cartwright, emphasized the importance of such competitions for keeping retired horses active. Another competitor, Lord Du Mesnil, who retired last year after racing in the Grand National, has also been retrained and participated in the Royal Windsor Horse Show earlier this year.
This year's event has seen a record number of entries, with many former racehorses now enjoying active lives in various equestrian disciplines. The managing director of RoR, David Catlow, noted that many retired racehorses are thriving in leisure homes or competing in local shows, highlighting the potential for these horses to lead fulfilling lives beyond racing.
