Retiree Lewis Kalb Achieves Dream of Announcing for Phillies

Lewis Kalb, a 73-year-old retiree from Medford Lakes, New Jersey, fulfilled a lifelong dream by announcing an inning for the Philadelphia Phillies during a home game against the Washington Nationals. Kalb, who has over three decades of experience as a play-by-play voice for various recreational games, won the team's annual auction, bidding $22,000 for the opportunity.

During the third inning, Kalb joined regular broadcasters Larry Andersen and Scott Franzke. Despite feeling nervous before the game, he quickly settled into the role after being introduced. Kalb's delivery was noted for its smoothness, and he demonstrated a level of experience that surprised the regular announcers. Although he made a few minor mistakes, his natural voice and presence were evident.

The Phillies Phanatic Auction, which began in 2013, allows fans to bid for a chance to join the radio booth. Kalb had previously attempted to win but was unsuccessful until this year. He expressed that the experience was a significant item on his bucket list, allowing him to share a memorable moment with his community.
