Rockets Release Guard JD Davison

The Houston Rockets have announced the waiver of guard JD Davison, a move that allows the team to reduce its salary cap below the luxury tax threshold.

Davison's contract, which had a non-guaranteed salary of $2,584,539, was picked up by the Rockets for the 2026/27 season in June. However, this decision means the team will not incur any dead money on their cap, regardless of whether he is claimed off waivers.

During his time in the NBA, Davison, who was selected 53rd overall in the 2022 draft, played primarily on two-way contracts, averaging limited minutes and points. He had a more notable performance in the G League, where he was named MVP in the 2024/25 season. The Rockets now have 14 players on standard contracts, with the recent waiver allowing them to potentially sign another player without exceeding the luxury tax limit.
