Roger Craig's Historic 1,000-Yard Season Set New NFL Standard

In 1985, Roger Craig, a running back for the San Francisco 49ers, made history by becoming the first player in NFL history to accumulate over 1,000 yards both rushing and receiving in a single season, finishing with 1,050 rushing yards and 1,016 receiving yards.

Prior to this achievement, no player had even reached 800 yards in both categories during a season. Craig's coach, Bill Walsh, had challenged him after the 1984 season to aim for 1,000 yards, motivating Craig to strive for both milestones.

Craig's remarkable performance set a benchmark for all-purpose backs, a record that has only been matched by two players since: Marshall Faulk in 1999 and Christian McCaffrey in 2019. Craig, who retired in 1993, was later inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame, solidifying his legacy in football history.
