Romania Destroys Marine Drone Near Neptun Deep Gas Project
On August 20, Romania deployed F-16 fighter jets to eliminate a marine drone located a few hundred meters from the Neptun Deep gas project in the Black Sea, as stated by Defense Minister Radu Miruta.
This incident reflects the increasing risks to vital energy infrastructure in the region, attributed to drones and mines associated with the ongoing conflict in Ukraine. The Neptun Deep project is anticipated to position Romania as the largest gas producer in the European Union by 2027.
Miruta noted that the drone, which was confirmed to contain explosives, was destroyed to protect the safety of personnel working on the platform. Although the drone's origin was not disclosed, Ukraine confirmed it was not one of its own. Romanian President Nicusor Dan condemned the incident, attributing responsibility to Russia, while European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen described it as part of a broader campaign of threats.
