Rory McIlroy Struggles at FedEx St. Jude Championship
Rory McIlroy concluded the FedEx St. Jude Championship in 66th place out of 68 competitors, finishing at 8 over par after a final round of 2-over 72 at TPC Southwind in Memphis. This marked his first competitive outing since the Open Championship nearly a month ago, during which he failed to break par across four rounds.
McIlroy acknowledged that his lack of preparation affected his performance, stating that he felt increasingly lost with his swing as the tournament progressed. Despite making five birdies in his last ten holes, he also recorded bogeys on the final two holes, which did not significantly improve his outlook for the upcoming BMW Championship.
Throughout the tournament, McIlroy struggled with his driving and overall mechanics, leading him to focus too much on his swing rather than the shots he needed to execute. He plans to work with his swing coach and caddie before heading to Bellerive Country Club for the BMW Championship, where he previously tied for 50th in 2018. Despite his struggles, he remains in 13th place in the FedEx Cup standings, qualifying for the next playoff round.
