Rory McIlroy Supports PGA Tour's Matchplay Format for 2028 Play-offs

Rory McIlroy, a two-time Masters champion, expressed his support for the PGA Tour's announcement of a new matchplay format for the end-of-season play-offs, set to begin in 2028. The PGA Tour CEO, Brian Rolapp, revealed that the Tour Championship will span two weeks at different courses, featuring head-to-head matchplay.

McIlroy, who has won the FedEx Cup three times, noted that the return of matchplay reflects the PGA Tour's responsiveness to fan desires. He described the new format as a significant change and expressed enthusiasm for the concept after being briefed on the plans.

The current FedEx Cup play-offs, which have evolved over the years, consist of a three-event strokeplay series. The upcoming Tour Championship at East Lake in Atlanta will offer a purse of $40 million. McIlroy highlighted the importance of fan engagement in shaping the Tour's decisions and suggested that the changes could enhance the appeal of golf.
