Royals Acquire Jacob Berry from Marlins

The Kansas City Royals have acquired Jacob Berry, an infielder/outfielder, from the Miami Marlins, with the Marlins receiving cash in the deal. This transaction occurs after the trade deadline, as players not on a 40-man roster can still be traded.

Berry was selected by the Marlins as the sixth overall pick in the 2022 draft, signing for a $6 million bonus. Despite a promising college career at LSU, where he posted impressive batting statistics, his professional performance has been underwhelming, with a .245 batting average and 35 home runs over 1,933 plate appearances in the minors.

While Berry has struggled with power, he has shown a solid approach at the plate this season, achieving a 15.2% walk rate and a 14.2% strikeout rate in Triple-A. He has also demonstrated versatility by playing multiple positions and contributing with stolen bases. The Royals may view him as a potential utility player, providing depth in Triple-A while he remains eligible for the Rule 5 draft if not added to the 40-man roster.
