Royals Bring Back Outfielder Drew Waters

The Kansas City Royals have selected the contract of outfielder Drew Waters as they expand their active roster from 26 to 28 players. This decision comes after right-hander John Schreiber was claimed off waivers by the Yankees, creating an additional roster spot.

Waters, who is 27 years old, previously played for the Royals from 2022 to 2025. During his time with the team, he recorded 14 home runs and had a batting average of .234, with a walk rate of 7.6% and a strikeout rate of 31.1%. In the outfield, he accumulated 1,528 1/3 innings, earning a defensive rating of minus-three from Defensive Runs Saved.

After being designated for assignment at the end of spring training in 2026, Waters cleared waivers and has been playing for Triple-A Omaha. His offensive performance this season has been below average, with a .251 batting average translating to an 85 wRC+. The Royals are expected to use him as a depth outfielder for late-game situations.
