Royals Option Lucas Erceg to Triple-A Omaha
The Kansas City Royals have announced the optioning of right-handed pitcher Lucas Erceg to Triple-A Omaha, with Carlos Durán being recalled from the same team as a corresponding move.
At 31 years old, this is Erceg's first experience in the minors. Once viewed as a key reliever for the Royals, his recent performance has led to this decision. After being drafted by the Brewers and transitioning to pitching in 2021, he had a promising start with the Athletics before being traded to the Royals in July 2024.
Despite a strong 2024 season with a 2.64 ERA, Erceg has struggled this year, posting a 6.23 ERA over 43 1/3 innings. His difficulties have resulted in a loss of his closer role, prompting the Royals to send him down in hopes of regaining form. The team faces decisions regarding his future, particularly with arbitration eligibility approaching.
