Royals Retain Tony Gonsolin, Decline Carlos Estévez's Option
The Kansas City Royals have confirmed that they will keep right-hander Tony Gonsolin for the 2027 season by exercising his club option worth $2.5 million. In contrast, they have declined the $13 million option for right-hander Carlos Estévez, who will now enter free agency after receiving a $2 million buyout.
Gonsolin, who has faced significant injury challenges, previously pitched 375 2/3 innings for the Dodgers from 2019 to 2023 with a 3.19 earned run average. However, he underwent Tommy John surgery in August 2023, which sidelined him for the remainder of that season and all of 2024. After a series of injuries, including a back issue and elbow discomfort, he made limited appearances in 2026, struggling with a 5.00 ERA.
Estévez's decline was anticipated due to his recent performance and health issues. After a solid 2025 season, his 2026 was marred by injuries, including a left foot contusion and a rotator cuff strain that required surgery. With his contract now voided, his future will depend on his recovery as he approaches his 34th birthday.
