Ruffy's Defensive Wrestling Impresses Volkanovski's Coach
Mauricio Ruffy has demonstrated significant advancements in his defensive wrestling, to the point where Alexander Volkanovski struggles to maintain control over him in training sessions. This observation comes from Volkanovski's head coach, Joe Lopez.
Since joining Volkanovski's training camp in Australia last year, Ruffy has focused on enhancing his ability to escape from unfavorable positions. After a loss to Benoit St. Denis in September 2025, he has achieved victories over Rafael Fiziev and Michael Chandler.
Lopez noted that Ruffy has shifted his strategy from seeking submissions to prioritizing effective escapes. He has also improved his fundamental positioning, moving away from a jiu-jitsu-centric approach. Ruffy is set to face Arman Tsarukyan in the co-main event of UFC 331 on September 19 in Los Angeles, where his wrestling skills will be put to the test against Tsarukyan's renowned grappling ability.
