Russia to Return to International Hockey Events Following CAS Ruling
Russia, which has faced a ban from international hockey for over four years, is set to return to international competitions beginning in December, as ruled by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS). This decision overturns the International Ice Hockey Federation's (IIHF) ban on Russia participating in events through 2026–27 due to safety and security concerns.
The IIHF had imposed the ban in February 2022 following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, a conflict that continues. While the International Olympic Committee lifted its blanket ban on Russian Olympic committees in July, the situation remains contentious, with Ukraine appealing this decision. The CAS panel determined that the IIHF's safety concerns lacked sufficient evidence.
The ruling has drawn criticism from several national hockey federations, with Finland calling it incomprehensible and Germany outright rejecting Russia's return. The first event affected by this ruling will be the World Juniors in Alberta in December, followed by U18 championships in Czechia and the U.S. A significant challenge looms for the Men's World Championship in Germany in May 2027, where adding Russia could displace Ukraine, raising complex issues.
