Rwanda Secures 10-Year Deal to Host Formula 1 Races Starting in Early 2030s
Rwanda has entered into a 10-year agreement with Formula 1 to host races starting in the early 2030s. The events will take place at a newly constructed circuit in Bugesera, located 25 miles south of Kigali and adjacent to the new international airport.
This will be the first Formula 1 race in Africa since 1993. The circuit, designed by former F1 driver Alex Wurz, aims to integrate with the natural landscape, utilizing elevation changes to enhance the racing experience and provide excellent viewing for fans.
Formula 1 views this partnership as a chance to broaden its presence in Africa, a market that has been less explored compared to other continents. The timing of the races is still under consideration, with F1 likely to avoid the main rainy season from March to May. Rwanda's President Paul Kagame expressed pride in hosting the event, emphasizing its potential to benefit the local economy and inspire young Africans.
