Rwanda to Host African Grand Prix, Marking F1's Return to Africa
The African Grand Prix was officially announced in Kigali, Rwanda, marking a significant return of Formula 1 to the continent after nearly 40 years. The deal, praised by F1 president Stefano Domenicali as a landmark achievement, comes after nearly a decade of efforts by F1's owners, Liberty Media, to establish a race in Africa.
Rwanda's successful bid includes a 10-year agreement to host the race starting in the early 2030s, distinguishing itself from previous attempts by Morocco and South Africa, which faced financial and logistical challenges. The new circuit will be located in Bugesera, approximately 25 miles from Kigali, and is part of a larger development initiative that includes a new international airport and various facilities.
While the project aims to boost tourism and investment in Rwanda, it has drawn scrutiny due to the country's human rights record. Critics argue that hosting such events may serve as a means of sportswashing. Nevertheless, the Rwandan government emphasizes that funding for the project will come from a mix of public and private investments, as part of a broader strategy to enhance the nation's economy.
