Sam Laidlow Opts for Challenge Samarkand Over 70.3 Worlds

Sam Laidlow has decided to forgo the 2026 IRONMAN 70.3 World Championship in Nice, France, opting instead to compete in Challenge Samarkand in Uzbekistan on September 13. This choice allows him to participate in a flatter race, contrasting with the more challenging elevation of the Nice course.

Laidlow's decision appears to be strategic, as he has never participated in the half-distance world championships during his nearly ten years as a professional athlete. He has, however, achieved notable success in middle-distance events, including multiple Challenge victories and a course record at 70.3 Valencia earlier this season.

His focus on full-distance racing is evident, having secured the IRONMAN World Championship title in Nice in 2023 and setting a record time of 7:21:04 at Challenge Roth. By competing in Samarkand, Laidlow aims to optimize his performance for the upcoming IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, where he hopes to leverage his strengths on the bike against his competitors.
