San Diego Padres Sign Austin Hays to Major-League Deal

The San Diego Padres have signed outfielder Austin Hays to a major-league contract, according to a league source. This decision comes as the team looks to enhance its offense and address the absence of several players, including Samad Taylor, who is on the injured list, and Ramón Laureano, who is likely out for the season.

Hays, a nine-year veteran and former All-Star, has faced challenges this season due to injuries, limiting him to just 12 games with the Chicago White Sox after signing a one-year, $6 million deal. He was designated for assignment and subsequently released. Despite his struggles this year, Hays has shown potential as a strong right-handed hitter against left-handed pitchers, boasting a 155 wRC+ against them last season and a career mark of 123.

Primarily playing left field, Hays is also capable of covering right field if necessary. The Padres are hopeful that his experience and skills will provide the offensive boost they need.
