Savita Punia Aims for Olympic Glory After Asian Games Success
Savita Punia, the experienced goalkeeper for the Indian women's hockey team, played a key role in India's historic gold medal victory at the Asian Games, marking the first win in 44 years. Her crucial save during a penalty stroke against China in the final was instrumental in securing the title.
After considering retirement last year, Savita found renewed motivation under the new coaching leadership of Sjoerd Marijne. She now believes that winning an Olympic medal at the 2028 Los Angeles Games is achievable, especially following the team's fifth-place finish at the World Cup and their recent Asian Games success.
Despite contemplating retirement, Savita was persuaded by Hockey India to continue her career. She expressed gratitude for the support from her coaches and teammates, emphasizing the collective effort that led to their improved performance. Looking ahead, she plans to establish a goalkeeping academy to nurture future talent in Indian hockey.
