Scarlets Managing Director Calls for Transparency Amid Welsh Rugby Changes

Jon Daniels, the managing director of Scarlets, has requested increased transparency from the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) regarding its plans to reduce the number of professional rugby teams from four to three by 2028. This announcement has raised uncertainty for both Scarlets and Ospreys, as the west region license will be awarded to either team.

Daniels has rejected the idea of a merger between Scarlets and Ospreys, which was previously considered in 2019 but ultimately abandoned. He emphasized the need for the WRU to justify the decision to cut a team, stating that the rationale behind this move has not been adequately shared with the clubs or the public.

The WRU plans to start the decision-making process in December, with a conclusion expected before the end of the 2026-27 season. Daniels believes that Welsh rugby can support four teams, similar to the structure in Ireland, and insists that discussions should include all stakeholders to address the implications for communities in west Wales.
