Schaefer's Overtime Performance Leads Islanders to Victory Over Predators
In a thrilling matchup, the New York Islanders defeated the Nashville Predators 4-3 in a shootout, with Matthew Schaefer playing a pivotal role during overtime.
The 19-year-old defenceman logged all five minutes of overtime, marking a notable achievement as he became the first player since the NHL began tracking overtime shifts in 2009-10 to not take a shift off. Schaefer finished the game with 32:16 of ice time, the third highest this season, and contributed an assist, extending his point streak to five games.
The Islanders initially took a commanding 3-0 lead in regulation with goals from Horvat, Duclair, and Schenn. However, the Predators rallied back, scoring three goals to force overtime. Kyle Palmieri and Bo Horvat successfully converted in the shootout, while Semyon Varlamov earned his first win in nearly two years.
