Scottie Scheffler Struggles at BMW Championship with Illness
Scottie Scheffler, the world’s top golfer, began the BMW Championship with a 2-over-par 72 on Thursday at Bellerive Country Club, leaving him needing to make up ground in the FedExCup Playoffs.
His round started poorly with three consecutive bogeys, putting him four over after seven holes. Although he managed to stabilize his game, this score marked his worst opening round since the U.S. Open in June. Scheffler, who was the defending champion and leader in the FedExCup standings, had previously dominated the FedEx St. Jude Championship.
After his round, Scheffler did not participate in the media session, citing illness and a hoarse voice. His performance statistics showed he struggled, ranking 48th in strokes gained on approach and 47th in putting. In contrast, Rory McIlroy led the tournament with a bogey-free 64, while Gary Woodland also opened strong with a 64. The BMW Championship is crucial as only the top 30 players in the FedExCup standings will advance to the Tour Championship.
