Sean McVay Considers Surprising Backup QB Decision for Rams
Los Angeles Rams head coach Sean McVay has hinted at a potential shift in the team's quarterback lineup, suggesting that Stetson Bennett IV, a fourth-round draft pick, could serve as the primary backup to Matthew Stafford instead of first-round pick Ty Simpson.
During a press conference following the Rams' preseason finale against the Los Angeles Chargers, McVay expressed confidence in both Bennett and Simpson, stating that the team feels good about their quarterback options. Reports indicate that Bennett's absence from the game may suggest he has secured the backup position.
Bennett has completed 23 of 37 passes for 219 yards and two touchdowns in the preseason, while Simpson has thrown for 382 yards and three touchdowns on 47 of 60 passing. With Stafford approaching 39 and having faced injuries, McVay appears to be considering a red-shirt rookie season for Simpson, making Bennett the likely choice for the upcoming regular-season opener against the San Francisco 49ers.
