Sean Strickland Criticizes Journalist Over UFC Pay Dispute
UFC middleweight champion Sean Strickland has voiced his displeasure with MMA journalist Ariel Helwani, who commented on Strickland's ongoing pay dispute with the UFC. Strickland has not competed since March, when he won the title from Khamzat Chimaev, and was expected to defend his belt against Nassourdine Imavov later this year.
Strickland's return has been delayed due to disagreements over his pay, which stem from a contract he signed prior to his fight against Chimaev. Helwani expressed a lack of sympathy for Strickland, arguing that since he agreed to the contract, he cannot demand a renegotiation now that he has regained his title. Strickland responded harshly to Helwani's views, labeling him as biased.
Other fighters, including Demetrious Johnson, have also weighed in, suggesting that Strickland's contractual obligations limit his options. Meanwhile, a gambling company has offered UFC fighters a $10,000 monthly sponsorship to help address ongoing pay concerns.
