SEC Implements Ban on Athletes with Professional Experience Returning to College Sports

The Southeastern Conference (SEC) has officially joined the Big Ten in prohibiting athletes who have professional experience from returning to college sports. This decision was announced via a statement on social media on Tuesday night.

The new policy states that member schools cannot field athletes who have declared for professional drafts without proper withdrawal, signed professional contracts, or appeared on a professional league roster. SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey has been granted the authority to impose penalties on programs that do not comply with this directive.

If a team signs a player with professional experience, the head coach will face a suspension for half the season, the team's operating budget will be reduced by half, and the school will lose its voting privileges within the SEC. This policy comes in response to recent court rulings, including one in Louisiana that allowed players seeking a fifth year of eligibility to return to college after attending NFL training camps. The SEC's stance creates a distinct roster standard amid ongoing legal challenges in college athletics.
