Sedgefield Racecourse Fined for Safety Violations Following Jockey Incident
Sedgefield Racecourse in County Durham has been fined £6,500 after a jockey was taken to the hospital in a horsebox rather than an ambulance following an incident in March.
The British Horseracing Authority (BHA) found that the racecourse failed to adhere to five safety instructions outlined in its Rules of Racing. The jockey, who remains unnamed, sustained injuries to his left clavicle and shoulder after a fall and was initially cleared to race but later advised by a doctor to seek further medical attention.
Due to the absence of ambulance crews at the venue, he was transported in a horsebox with medical staff following in a separate vehicle. The BHA noted that proper procedures for hospital transfer were not followed. Additional issues identified included a malfunctioning telephone line and inadequate medical facilities. The racecourse has since recognized its mistakes and reported significant improvements following an inspection in April.
