Selectors Justify Vaibhav Sooryavanshi's Vice-Captaincy for East Zone

The East Zone selectors have appointed 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi as vice-captain for the upcoming Duleep Trophy, a decision they describe as part of a long-term strategy for leadership development. This choice has garnered attention, especially since Ishan Kishan was named captain, while experienced players like Abhimanyu Easwaran and Mohammed Shami are also in the squad.

Sooryavanshi has played only eight first-class matches for Bihar, contrasting with Easwaran's 113 matches and previous captaincy experience. Manish Vardhan, a member of the selection committee, explained that the aim is to allow Sooryavanshi to learn about leadership by closely observing the captain. He noted that this role is intended to help the young player grow rather than signify his current status.

Vardhan clarified that Sooryavanshi is not automatically the stand-in captain if Kishan is unavailable, suggesting that an experienced player would likely take charge in such a scenario. The selectors view both Kishan and Sooryavanshi as integral to the future of Indian cricket.
