Shaquille O'Neal Launches Dunkman League to Revive Dunking Culture
Shaquille O'Neal has initiated the Dunkman league to revitalize the art of dunking in basketball, with the first championship scheduled for August 25. This league emerged from the Dunkman television show, which showcased dunkers globally but lacked live audience engagement and competitive judging.
The competition began with 24 dunkers, narrowing down to eight finalists who will vie for a $500,000 prize, broadcast live on TNT and HBO Max. Mac McClung, a three-time NBA slam-dunk contest champion, is the top seed in the finals. Dunkers participated in four group stages at Overtime Elite in Atlanta, with winners advancing to the championship round.
O'Neal, who serves as the league's founder and commissioner, aims to elevate dunking standards, noting that many current dunkers surpass professional athletes in skill. He expressed disappointment with recent NBA slam-dunk contests, which often fail to feature star players. Vince Carter, a member of the Dunkman commentary team and a 2024 Hall of Fame inductee, has also observed a lack of excitement in recent contests. Both O'Neal and Carter believe there are still innovative dunking possibilities yet to be explored.
