Shedeur Sanders Named Backup Quarterback for Cleveland Browns

Shedeur Sanders has been designated as the backup quarterback for the Cleveland Browns following a training camp competition in which he was outperformed by Deshaun Watson. Fox Sports analyst Joel Klatt expressed that while Sanders possesses the skills to succeed as an NFL starter, he may need to find a different team to realize his potential.

Klatt noted that Sanders was regarded as one of the top quarterbacks in his draft class, despite being selected in the fifth round as the 144th overall pick. During his rookie season, Sanders played in eight games, starting seven, and recorded a mixed performance with a 3-4 record, completing 56.6 percent of his passes for 1,400 yards, seven touchdowns, and ten interceptions.

Head coach Todd Monken confirmed Watson as the Week 1 starter, citing his experience as a factor, especially with challenging road games ahead. Watson's past injuries and performance have raised concerns, but Monken emphasized confidence in both quarterbacks. The Browns will begin their season on the road before facing Carolina in Week 3, where a poor start could lead to increased scrutiny regarding the quarterback situation.
