Shohei Ohtani Expected to Avoid Surgery and Return to Pitching in 2027
Following the Los Angeles Dodgers' elimination from the postseason, Shohei Ohtani is projected to avoid surgery this offseason and is expected to pitch again in 2027. Andrew Friedman, the Dodgers' president of baseball operations, confirmed that surgery is not being considered for Ohtani.
Ohtani expressed his intention to return as a two-way player after the Dodgers were swept by the Milwaukee Brewers in the National League Championship Series. He noted the need to reassess his treatment and training program for the upcoming season.
In the final game of the NLCS, Ohtani ended a 25-game home run drought, achieving his first extra-base hit and three RBIs of the postseason. Throughout the 2026 season, he made 14 starts, achieving an 8-2 record with a 1.79 ERA, while also batting .275 with 30 home runs in 135 games.
