Shreyas Royal has secured the lead at the British Chess Championship held in Coventry, achieving this after winning his last two matches against Bodhana Sivanandan and top seed Luke McShane.

The 17-year-old now stands at 6/7, placing him half a point ahead of a group of five players, including Ukrainian IM Svyatoslav Bazakutsa, who previously led the tournament with four consecutive victories.

Royal, originally from Bangalore and now residing in Woolwich, has demonstrated strong performance with five wins and two draws. His recent victories came as he capitalized on time pressure faced by his opponents, particularly in his match against McShane, where he employed sharp tactical strategies. The upcoming penultimate round will see Royal face nine-time champion Michael Adams.
