Smriti Mandhana Takes Over as Captain of Indian Women's Cricket Team
Smriti Mandhana has been appointed as the captain of the Indian women's cricket team, succeeding Harmanpreet Kaur. At 30 years old, she is the most experienced player on the team after Kaur and has previously led Royal Challengers Bengaluru to two Women's Premier League titles.
Mandhana's immediate goal is to enhance the team's performance in T20 cricket, a format where India has yet to secure a World Cup title. The team has faced challenges in recent tournaments, failing to reach the knockout stages.
While India excels in ODIs, as evidenced by their World Cup victory last year, there are concerns regarding their T20 capabilities, particularly against stronger teams like Australia and South Africa. Mandhana and the team management will need to address batting depth and develop all-rounders ahead of the next T20 World Cup in 2028.
