Social Media Influencers Face Increased Shark Attacks for Viral Content
Researchers are raising alarms about a growing trend among social media influencers who swim with sharks to create viral content. This behavior has led to an increase in dangerous encounters, with shark scientist Kristian Parton noting a significant rise in such videos.
One notable incident involved Tayane Dalazen, a Brazilian lawyer and social media influencer, who was bitten by a seven-foot nurse shark while swimming during a tour. Despite sustaining injuries, she shared the experience online, garnering millions of views and likes. Following the incident, she participated in a Discovery Channel documentary to analyze the event.
The International Shark Attack File reported a notable increase in shark bites linked to individuals attempting to film themselves with the animals. Past incidents include severe injuries and fatalities, highlighting the risks associated with this trend. A recent study indicated that influencers often disregard safety guidelines, further elevating the danger, even though the overall risk of shark attacks remains low.
