Sonny Gray Becomes Free Agent After Option Not Exercised
Sonny Gray has officially entered free agency after the mutual option with the Boston Red Sox was not exercised. The MLB Players Association confirmed his status as part of a list of players who have resolved their options for the offseason.
While it remains unclear whether Gray or the Red Sox declined the $30 million option for 2027, the decision was anticipated as mutual options are typically not exercised by both parties. Gray will receive a $10 million buyout and is coming off a strong season where he posted a 2.72 ERA over 29 starts and 169 innings.
As he approaches his 37th birthday and prepares for his 15th MLB season, Gray has expressed his intention to continue playing in 2027. He may seek a two-year contract but has also hinted at the possibility of retirement. Gray is likely to favor teams located on the East Coast or near his home in Nashville, which could influence his options this offseason. A return to the Red Sox is possible, although they currently have a full rotation with Garrett Crochet's return.
