Sophie Woods Sets Record in Via Alpina Endurance Challenge
Ultra-runner Sophie Woods has set a new record for completing the Via Alpina, an endurance challenge that spans 2,000km across eight countries, finishing in just 29 days.
Woods began her journey on July 4 in Italy, traversing through Slovenia, Austria, Germany, Liechtenstein, Switzerland, and France, before concluding on the Mediterranean coast in Monaco. During her run, she faced extreme weather conditions, including two heatwaves and storms, as well as wildfires that forced her to take a detour adding extra distance and elevation to her route.
The Via Alpina is known for its challenging terrain, with elevation comparable to climbing Mount Everest multiple times. Woods, supported by her husband, friend, and dog, relied on a diet of McDonald's, pasta, and energy gels to sustain her through long days of running. Her achievement follows a notable year for women in ultra-running, and she expressed her intention to relax and recuperate after her grueling challenge.
