Southern 500 Intensifies NASCAR Chase Competition

Denny Hamlin's struggles at the Southern 500 tighten the NASCAR Chase standings, with several drivers closing the gap as the championship race continues.

The Southern 500 has intensified the NASCAR Chase for the Championship, as Denny Hamlin faced difficulties that allowed other competitors to close in on him. Despite earning 16 stage points, Hamlin finished 18th due to a collision with Michael McDowell that damaged his vehicle, coupled with a slow pit stop.

Christopher Bell's victory and stage win positioned him just 12 points behind Hamlin, while Ryan Blaney and Tyler Reddick trailed by 16 and 24 points, respectively. The race saw Ty Gibbs finish second, followed by Reddick, Blaney, Kyle Larson, and Chase Briscoe, all of whom are now within striking distance of Hamlin.

William Byron's chances were severely impacted by an engine failure, resulting in a 37th place finish, while Chase Elliott also struggled with pit road issues. Larson, who led for a significant portion of the race, finished fifth and remains a contender in the championship standings.
