SRO Chief Calls for Rethink of GT3 Amid Rising Costs
Stephane Ratel, the founder and CEO of SRO Motorsports Group, has highlighted the challenges facing the GT3 category, particularly regarding rising costs and the shift in manufacturers' focus towards more extreme designs. He expressed these concerns during the Spa 24 Hours, noting that while participation remains strong, the sustainability of the category is at risk.
Ratel pointed out that manufacturers are currently moving away from the traditional road-first philosophy, which could jeopardize the future of GT3. He emphasized the importance of having a clear rulebook to guide manufacturers and ensure the category's longevity. Discussions with the GT Commission and the FIA are ongoing, as Ratel seeks to address these issues proactively.
He proposed a relaunch of the GT3 category with a new platform, drawing parallels to the ACO's approach with the Hypercar category set for 2030. Ratel also mentioned the possibility of a new GT1 category, provided it adheres to specific regulations. He stressed that maintaining a healthy competition and long-term stability is more important than simply increasing the number of manufacturers involved.
