Steelers Consider Roster Cuts Amid Quarterback Strategy

The Pittsburgh Steelers are reportedly exploring unconventional roster decisions that could impact their tight end Robert Tonyan. The team is enthusiastic about their two young quarterbacks, but neither is prepared to contribute immediately.

To accommodate their plans, the Steelers might retain four quarterbacks on the 53-man roster, positioning Mason Rudolph as the backup. This situation necessitates cuts, with Tonyan potentially being among those released. According to Mike De Fabo from The Athletic, other players at risk include backup center Ryan McCollum, defensive linemen Dean Lowry and Esezi Otomewo, and safety Rayshawn Jenkins.

Tonyan signed a one-year, $1.3 million contract with the Steelers this offseason, reuniting him with Aaron Rodgers, who favored him during their time together at the Green Bay Packers. However, Tonyan's performance has declined significantly since his peak, where he recorded 11 touchdowns in the 2020 season. After a lackluster stint with the Chicago Bears and a brief period with the Minnesota Vikings, he now finds himself behind Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington in the Steelers' tight end hierarchy.
