Stephen Hubbard Released from Russian Detention Amid U.S.-Russia Diplomatic Efforts
On Wednesday, Russia released Stephen Hubbard, a retired American teacher who had been imprisoned for more than four years on charges related to fighting as a mercenary in Ukraine. This release was facilitated during a visit by U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff, coinciding with diplomatic efforts by the Trump administration.
Hubbard was sentenced to nearly seven years in prison after a closed trial in 2024, where prosecutors claimed he had signed a contract with the Ukrainian military following Russia's invasion in February 2022. He was captured two months later. The Biden administration had classified Hubbard as wrongfully detained.
Witkoff expressed gratitude to Russian President Vladimir Putin for the release, noting that Hubbard was at Pulkovo airport in St. Petersburg after being freed. This event occurs amidst complex U.S.-Russia relations, with ongoing tensions between Washington and Kyiv. While Hubbard is the second American released by Russia in recent months, advocates continue to call for the release of other Americans still detained.
