Steve Belichick on Medical Leave from UNC Football
Steve Belichick, the defensive coordinator for the University of North Carolina football team, is currently on indefinite medical leave. This announcement was made by his father, head coach Bill Belichick, as the team gears up for its second season under his leadership.
Bill Belichick indicated that the team is hopeful for Steve's return before the season opener scheduled for August 29 in Ireland. In the meantime, the coaching staff will manage defensive duties collectively, and no interim defensive coordinator will be appointed. Additionally, North Carolina's general manager, Michael Lombardi, is also on leave due to an internal investigation.
Steve Belichick previously worked with Bill Belichick at the New England Patriots from 2012 to 2023 and served as the defensive coordinator at the University of Washington in 2024 before joining UNC in 2025.
