Steve Smith Reflects on Trauma from 2018 Ball-Tampering Scandal

Steve Smith has expressed that he continues to feel traumatized by the events surrounding the 2018 ball-tampering scandal, commonly referred to as 'sandpapergate'. As Australia gears up for its first Test series in South Africa since the incident, Smith reflected on the emotional toll it has taken on him.

The scandal erupted when Cameron Bancroft was caught using sandpaper to alter the ball's condition during a Test match. Following this, Smith admitted to having prior knowledge of the tampering, resulting in him being stripped of his captaincy and receiving a one-year ban from Cricket Australia. The intense media scrutiny during his departure from South Africa and subsequent return to Australia left a lasting impression on him.

Despite the challenges, Smith has made a successful return to international cricket, rejoining the Australian team in 2019 and later being appointed vice-captain. He acknowledged the difficulties he faced during the initial aftermath of the scandal but emphasized his efforts to move forward and learn from the experience. The upcoming three-Test series in South Africa is set to commence on October 9.
