Steve Smith's Neck Injury Confirmed, Expected to Return for New Zealand Test
Cricket Australia has confirmed that Steve Smith is dealing with a cervical facet joint injury in his neck, which he sustained during the second Test in Gqeberha. As a result, he has withdrawn from participating in the third Test against South Africa in Cape Town.
Smith underwent MRI scans that revealed the joint damage, which affects his neck movement. Despite his efforts to prepare for the match, he was unable to achieve the necessary range of motion to play. Cricket Australia stated that he will continue treatment and rehabilitation, with expectations for his return in time for the first Test against New Zealand in Perth on December 9.
The upcoming Test marks the beginning of a demanding schedule for Australia, featuring 10 Tests over a span of three months. Smith's absence from the current Test means he is unlikely to play at Newlands again, a venue linked to a previous scandal that impacted his career.
