
Study Reveals Complex Impact of Climate Change on Marine Mollusks
Research from the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has revealed that climate change will have varied effects on marine mollusks, challenging the notion that warmer oceans will solely result in smaller animals. The study, which analyzed over 23,000 species, indicates that while many species may decrease in size, others could actually grow larger by the year 2100.
Published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, the study utilized extensive species occurrence records and body-size measurements to assess the impact of temperature, oxygen levels, and ocean productivity across ten major ocean basins. Under high-emission scenarios, significant reductions in average body size are expected in about two-thirds of the examined groups, with some species potentially losing up to 16% in length.
Interestingly, cephalopods, including squid and octopuses, are projected to increase in size in certain regions like the Arctic Ocean. The findings emphasize the importance of geographical and biological factors in determining how marine life will respond to climate change, highlighting that future greenhouse gas emissions will significantly influence these outcomes.
