
Study Suggests Postbiotic May Lower Brain Damage Risk from Concussions
Recent research has indicated that a postbiotic may help mitigate brain damage resulting from concussions. This study is particularly relevant as efforts continue to develop a diagnostic test for chronic traumatic encephalopathy (CTE) in living individuals.
The study, highlighted by John Ellis, found that mice with traumatic brain injuries showed reduced damage and improved cognitive performance when administered a postbiotic prior to injury. This postbiotic, known as indole-3-propionic acid, is produced during the digestion of tryptophan by gut bacteria.
Researchers observed that higher levels of this molecule correlated with decreased swelling around brain lesions and improved neurological outcomes after six months. The findings suggest that individuals at risk of traumatic brain injuries, such as athletes and military personnel, might benefit from preventive postbiotic consumption. Further studies are planned to explore the potential advantages of this approach for humans experiencing head trauma.
