Sumariwalla Defends Neeraj Chopra's Achievements Amid Fitness Concerns
Adille Sumariwalla, chairman of the Athletics Federation of India's selection committee, has defended Neeraj Chopra, asserting that the athlete's achievements, including a recent silver medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, should be celebrated rather than scrutinized. Chopra, who has faced fitness challenges due to a lower back injury, has consistently performed at a high level since setting a junior world record in 2016.
Chopra's silver at the Commonwealth Games followed a gold medal win in 2018, and he missed the 2022 edition due to injury. Sumariwalla praised Chopra's return to form, stating that winning a silver medal is still a significant accomplishment. He highlighted Chopra's extensive medal collection, including two Olympic medals, and urged that his occasional silver should not diminish his status as India's top athlete.
The Athletics Federation of India has designated August 7 as National Javelin Day to honor Chopra's Olympic success. Looking ahead, Chopra is set to compete in the Lausanne Diamond League and the Diamond League Finals in Brussels, with expectations of qualifying for the upcoming Asian Games. Sumariwalla expressed confidence in Chopra's ability to improve and emphasized the depth of talent in Indian athletics, noting the country's best medal haul at the Commonwealth Games outside of India.
