Sumit Nagal Shifts Mindset After Challenging 2026 Tennis Season
Sumit Nagal, India's top-ranked singles tennis player, has faced a challenging 2026 season due to injuries that have impacted his performance, resulting in a drop to No. 247 in the rankings. The 29-year-old has expressed a shift in his mindset, emphasizing the importance of enjoying the game rather than fixating on outcomes.
Nagal's season began with a hip injury sustained during a Challenger event in Thailand, which led him to return early for a Davis Cup match against the Netherlands. He later encountered a wrist issue that hindered his performance until May. Despite these setbacks, he achieved a Challenger title in Romania and reached the semifinals in Czechia, indicating an improvement in his game.
After a close loss in the US Open qualifiers, Nagal recognized the need to change his approach, stating that he had been overly focused on winning. He aims to compete without the pressure of constant victories, acknowledging that this shift is crucial for his enjoyment and mental well-being. Nagal is also open to supporting younger players in Indian tennis, although he prefers not to assume a leadership role.
