Summer Shaw Wins Bronze at Commonwealth Games, Returns to McDonald's Job
Summer Shaw, a judoka from Scotland, recently won a bronze medal in the 48kg category at the Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow. Just a week after her achievement, the 22-year-old returned to her job at McDonald's, where she has worked part-time since her A-level studies.
Shaw's victory marked a significant milestone, as it was Scotland's first judo medal at the Games. Following her win, she shared a TikTok video that quickly went viral, garnering over one million views and prompting discussions about athletes balancing work and competition.
Despite her success, Shaw noted that many elite athletes in sports like judo often need additional income sources due to limited financial rewards. She receives an Athlete Performance Award to help with living expenses but still faces costs for competitions not covered by funding. Shaw has also initiated a GoFundMe page to support her goal of competing in the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
