Sunderland Secures Malick Fofana from Lyon for Nearly £30 Million
Sunderland has reached an agreement with Lyon for the transfer of winger Malick Fofana, valued at just under £30 million. The 21-year-old player is currently traveling to England to undergo a medical examination and is expected to finalize a five-year contract.
The deal includes an initial fee of £25.6 million, with potential add-ons amounting to £4.3 million. Fofana is reportedly enthusiastic about joining Sunderland, especially as the team prepares for its first European campaign in over five decades after qualifying for the Europa League.
This transfer follows Arsenal's unsuccessful attempts to secure Fofana, as they could not agree on a fee with Lyon. Fofana, who began his career at KAA Gent, joined Lyon in 2024. He will be joining fellow new signing Kevin Danso at Sunderland, who is arriving from Tottenham on an initial loan with an option to buy. Sunderland has also added defenders Thomas Meunier and Dayann Methalie, along with midfielder Jules Ahoka, to their roster this summer after finishing seventh in their first season back in the top flight.
