Supreme Court Upholds Ban on Immigration Judges' Authority to Postpone Deportations
On October 27, the US Supreme Court ruled against reinstating the power of immigration judges to temporarily delay deportation cases, upholding an agreement between the Trump administration and Texas that prohibits this practice.
The court denied an emergency request from Baltimore and two other cities, along with an immigrant advocacy group, to pause the agreement while legal challenges are ongoing. The decision was issued without explanation, and no justices dissented.
This agreement, filed in June 2022, was part of a broader effort by the Trump administration to end the practice of administrative closure, which allowed judges to manage their caseloads by postponing certain deportation cases. Critics argue that this practice effectively granted indefinite amnesty to undocumented immigrants.
