Susanne Buckenlei Returns to Norseman Triathlon for 50th Birthday Celebration
Susanne Buckenlei, a three-time champion of the Norseman triathlon, is back to compete as she celebrates her 50th birthday. Buckenlei, who won the race from 2009 to 2011, was inspired to return after a lighthearted conversation about her milestone birthday with Hårek Stranheim, the race's founder.
She expressed her love for the race, highlighting the beauty of swimming in the fjord at sunrise and the joy of being supported by friends during the event. Buckenlei noted that her focus this time is not on winning but on enjoying the experience and completing the race. Her support crew includes her boyfriend and friends who have been part of her journey since her championship years.
Outside of racing, Buckenlei has spent the last 25 years as a triathlon coach, balancing her coaching career with a passion for skiing and other sports. She emphasizes the importance of enjoying sports for the sake of enjoyment rather than competition, a value she hopes to instill in her daughter, Luna. As she prepares for the race, she remains realistic about her goals, aiming to earn a black shirt, a symbol of completing the challenging course.
