Suspect Arrested After Stealing Tesla and Speeding Down San Diego Boardwalk
A man is in custody following an incident on September 14, where he allegedly stole a Tesla and drove it recklessly down the Pacific Beach boardwalk in San Diego. The high-speed chase endangered numerous pedestrians, but fortunately, only one individual sustained serious, non-life-threatening injuries.
The suspect, identified as 39-year-old Juan Antonio Gonzaba, faces multiple charges including driving under the influence, hit-and-run, vehicle theft, and evading police. The police pursuit began around 12:30 p.m. when officers recognized the Tesla as stolen and attempted to stop it.
The vehicle reached high speeds on the narrow boardwalk, which is approximately 10 feet wide and heavily trafficked by locals and tourists. Bystanders documented the event on social media, and the Tesla eventually came to a stop at Thomas Avenue, where Gonzaba exited and fled on foot. He was apprehended by several witnesses in a nearby parking lot. Gonzaba is scheduled to appear in court on September 16, with a bond set at $100,000.
